Domestic Shipping FAQs

Domestic shipping is when a parcel is shipped within the United States and U.S. territories including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and military bases (APO/FPO/DPO). It is a process that can involve multiple carriers, from initial parcel distribution to a last mile delivery carrier. The best solution for your business can depend on several factors, including parcel size, volume and required speed of delivery.

OSM Worldwide operates seven days a week, expediting processing to ensure your packages arrive on time.

Domestic shipping refers to shipping in the United States and U.S. territories including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and military bases (APO/FPO/DPO). International shipping involves shipping outside U.S. borders to different countries. The processes are similar, but there are distinctions between these two parcel shipping services, including:

  • Cost
  • Time
  • Packaging
  • Parcel regulations
  • Tracking

OSM Worldwide works with a wide range of different businesses. Some of the industries we provide shipping solutions for include:

For companies in need of fulfillment services, we also provide 3PL partnership solutions.

Domestic package types:

  • Parcels
  • Marketing parcels
  • Bound printed matter (BPM)

Costs for domestic shipping services are calculated based on several factors:

  • Parcel dimensions: Look at the actual size of your parcel. The bigger the parcel, the greater your shipping cost. Dimensions often are used to calculate the dimensional weight (DIM weight) of the parcel.
  • Parcel weight: This is based on how heavy the item is. If the actual weight is higher than the DIM weight, then the actual weight will be used to calculate costs.
  • Shipping destination: This is the distance the parcel travels from its origin point to arrival at its destination. Parcel carriers will break the country down into shipping zones to calculate this. These zones are calculated based on where a parcel is shipped from, though the general rule is that the higher the zone number, the higher the shipping cost.
  • Delivery speed: The faster you want your parcel delivered, the higher the shipping rate. Speed costs can also be influenced by distance and the distribution locations of the business. To meet certain delivery times across long distances, you may be limited to specific shipping options; ones that come at a higher cost.

The domestic shipping costs for your business can trickle down and have a negative effect on your customers. If the cost of shipping is too high, many shoppers will abandon their carts. This is due to several factors:

  • Purchase decisions: High shipping costs deter customers from completing a purchase, influencing the purchase decision.
  • Customer satisfaction: Customers can become dissatisfied when they perceive shipping costs to be too high, especially if these costs are not clear from the start. Customers appreciate transparency and like to know shipping costs and what the costs cover, from the beginning.
  • Loyalty: Transparency and shipping costs customers deem reasonable, can go a long way to building a lasting relationship with your customer base. This will help your business not just attract new customers but retain them as well.
  • Competition: When customers abandon their shopping cart, they’ll start to check out the competition to find a better deal. You want to make sure your shipping costs don’t put revenue into the competitions’ pockets.

We’ll work with you to develop a domestic shipping solution that meets your needs. In the meantime, check out our blog for tips on how your shipping service can reduce cart abandonment and increase your conversions.

OSM Worldwide is an eCommerce parcel expeditor that optimizes shipping processes to ensure fast and reliable deliveries by last mile carriers. Our OSM Premium Network leverages streamlined transportation routes, technologically advanced operations and data-driven insights to ensure fast, cost-effective and reliable package delivery in an average of 3 days.
